PF3 - Parents For Full and Fair Funding
Texas Legislative Update
Why is SBISD sending $53 million to the state of Texas this year, and an estimated $80 million next year? Why is this a crisis for our district? What can we do about it?
A group of parents from SBISD went to Austin on February 27 to show support for Texas PTA and Texas public schools. We met with legislators and rallied on the steps of the capitol in Austin.
A big concern for many parents and our school board are the recapture payments that SBISD will be sending to the state ($53 million this year, and estimates of $80 million next year, and $110 million in 2019). These payments are not sustainable and will adversely effect our children's education. Our recapture payments have increased 719% since 2008, the largest increase of ANY of the over 1,200 school districts in the state of Texas.
It is imperative that our Texas legislators know that public education matters to us. We must let legislators know that a change in the way Texas schools are funded is important, urgent, and achievable.
Our Texas legislators are willing to listen to our concerns - it is the job of our elected officials to represent us, and in order to do that, they need to know what is important to the people whom they represent. On Monday, SBISD parents held over a dozen meetings with representatives and senators and their staff in Austin, to talk about the importance of school funding. Our legislators are listening, but they need to hear from more people.
On Tuesday, Dr. Muri testified to the Texas House Public Education Committee about our district and the effects of recapture payments, including the fact that we are falling behind in teacher salaries, which is going to make it difficult to keep teachers in SBISD. We cannot let this happen. Without our teachers, where are we heading as a district? Read more about Dr. Muri's testimony here. Watch the the video of his testimony here (which starts at the 3:11 mark.)
What can you do?
While the long-term goal may be to change the school funding formula, there are several short-term goals that will give SBISD some relief. A parent group, called Parents for Full & Fair Funding of Texas Public Schools (PF3), is actively pursuing three specific goals that are achievable this legislative session, but they can't do it without your help. PF3 is trying to keep more of our property tax money in SBISD, and you can read more about the specifics at parentsforfullfairfunding.org.
Please sign the petition started by PF3, to show that you support changes that will benefit students. If you've already signed, please ask your friends and neighbors to sign as well. Make sure your spouse signs the petition. By signing, you are letting the Texas state legislators know that school funding matters and you are helping to make change, with the goal to use education dollars for students, including students in SBISD.
Contact your state representative and senator and let them know that school funding is important to you. Click here to find out who represents you in the Texas legislature.
Stay informed. Click here for legislative information from SBISD.
